Founded in 1146 by the Tourtour monks in the wilderness of the Var region, Le Thoronet Abbey is the most austere of the three sister Cistercian abbeys in Provence (along with Silvacane and Sénanque). Devoid of any sculpted decoration, its harmony lies in the series of architectural spaces created in a highly geometric Romanesque style.

Raised from ruin, its original appearance has been recaptured after major restoration work. The Abbey, steeped in history and spirituality, is an unembellished austere place conducive to silence and contemplation on the sense of the sacred.
